Can medicinal cannabis help with parkinson's in NZ?
Insufficient evidence for parkinson's. Insufficient evidence for motor symptoms; emerging for selected non-motor outcomes like quality of life. Higher risk in older patients. There is no fixed list of qualifying conditions in NZ — whether it's appropriate for you is a clinical judgement for a registered doctor. This is education, not a treatment recommendation.
What the evidence says
Evidence is insufficient for motor symptoms and only emerging for selected non-motor outcomes. RCTs are small and have not reproduced observational reports of motor improvement; one found CBD 300 mg/day improved quality of life but not UPDRS motor scores. Cannabinoids were generally well tolerated in trials, but THC's effects on cognition, balance and blood pressure are risky in an older, fall- and cognition-vulnerable population.
Cannabinoids studied
- CBD
- THC
Key cautions
- THC can impair cognition, balance and blood pressure — risky in older patients.
- Drug interactions with Parkinson's medications.
- Does not support replacing standard therapy.
