Not enough good evidence to draw conclusions. Should not replace proven treatments.

Can medicinal cannabis help with ptsd in NZ?

Insufficient evidence for ptsd. Insufficient evidence. High-quality reviews found cannabis did not reduce PTSD symptoms; it should not displace trauma-focused therapy. There is no fixed list of qualifying conditions in NZ — whether it's appropriate for you is a clinical judgement for a registered doctor. This is education, not a treatment recommendation.

What the evidence says

The evidence is mostly observational and high-risk-of-bias. The high-quality Annals of Internal Medicine review found insufficient evidence to draw conclusions, and observational data showed cannabis did not reduce PTSD symptoms versus non-use. A minority of patients experienced worsening. It should not displace trauma-focused psychotherapy or SSRIs/SNRIs, and is only ever one part of a wider, professionally supported treatment plan.

Cannabinoids studied

  • Balanced THC:CBD
  • CBD

Key cautions

  • THC can worsen anxiety, paranoia and PTSD symptoms in some people.
  • Elevated cannabis-use-disorder risk in PTSD populations.
  • Should not replace first-line evidence-based treatment.
